1) Kondanani Children’s Home

2) Supporting Kabwe Empowerment for Land Ownership (SKELO)

3) Ubumi Children’s Project

KONDANANI CHILDREN’S HOME
The home is in Luanshya, Zambia. It has a population of two hundred thousand people, with 75 thousand orphans. Most of the orphaned households are headed by a sibling 13- 18 years of age.
The unemployment rate in Luanshya is 99%. Luanshya was a booming copper mine town, with all the industries such as the copper cable company ZAMEFA, the grilling company MPELEMBE DRILLING, and all other business thrived because the copper mine was doing well. In 1996 the Zambian government sold the mine to BININA group of companies, within a few years the mine was ground to a stop, most of the shafts were closed down and 99.5 % of the people lost their jobs. The two hospitals and clinics run by the mine closed down. One of the hospitals ROAN Antelope hospitals has being taken over by the government, like all government hospitals there are no medicines, equipment or personnel, Luanshya hospital is still open with a skeleton staff. 99% of the registered and doctors have left Luanshya.
There is a high rate of suicide and depression related deaths in Luanshya. While the international organization that render help to orphans have concentrated on larger cities like Lusaka, Ndola and Kitwe, Luanshya has been ignored.

Supporting Kabwe Empowerment for Land Ownership (SKELO)

Mission Statement

To provide food security to vulnerable households through ecological and sustainable agricultural practices among the local women subsistence farmers in central province of Zambia.

Objectives

· To enhance food productivity and security to 50 women’s farmers groups by 2010 in the district of Kabwe, central province of Zambia.
· To provide care and support to 250 children in Kabwe district, central province of Zambia by 2010, who are orphaned and are being supported by single parents with a key focus on women households affected by HIV/AIDS

Background Information

Supporting Kabwe Empowerment for Land Ownership (SKELO) was established in 2004 to provide assistance to women subsistence farmers affected by HIV/AIDS.
Based in Zambia’s Kabwe district with a population of XXXX, and with HIV/AIDS prevalence rate of %- the epidemic, like in many parts of the country, has crippled many households, eroding away the masculine population. In most cases, families are headed by women households. Food production at subsistence level has drastically dropped due to the fact that most of the bread winners have died living windows to fend for themselves and looking after children in their households. Women are forced to work hard in the field to such an extent that they neglect other responsibilities, such as providing love and family support to their children .In worst scenarios, women are forced to indulge in prostitution as a means of raising money for food at household level. Children have been the victim of this scenario and in most cases, children are forced to work in the fields and abandon their legal rights of an education and love.
It is for this reason that SKELO was formed with a group of women subsistence farmers to act as a support group for women who have lost their families and are unable to produce enough food to look after their families .This is done in 4 key areas of support ;

· Training in Income Generation
· Provision of farming inputs
· Provision of care and support to women headed households in order to meet some of the basic needs of the children in those households.

What we do
· We facilitate agriculture extension services to local subsistence farmers groups.
· We provide local inputs to local subsistence farmers groups.(seeds and fertilizers where a need arises)
· We provide training in basic income generating activities at household levels for women households to enhance food security.
· We provide community support systems to vulnerable households who are unable to cope with the demand on the agriculture fields.
· We help women headed households to meet the needs of children so that the children are not exploited on the agriculture fields but go to school and fulfill their basic rights.
